Volunteer Opportunities
Listed here are some of the volunteer opportunities available at the Avenue Theatre.MINOR FIX-UP/CLEANING It's not glamorous, but anytime you have a hankering to do some serious cleaning or feel like picking up a paint brush, we always have cleaning/painting/minor fix-up projects going on.
MAJOR REPAIRS/RENOVATIONS If you're looking to volunteer and you have carpentry, plumbing or electrical skills, we have some renovations and repairs we'd like to discuss with you!
DIRECTING We would have more events at the Theatre if there were more people willing to be in charge of those events. We especially need directors for plays. This is one of the few areas where we require our volunteers to have previous experience in what we're asking them to do. The good thing is you can gain the experience needed by helping with other events at the Theatre -- for example serving as assistant director or stage manager. If you have previous directing experience at the community theatre or college level, we'd love to visit with you.
For Theatre-sponsored productions, there is always need for help in at least some of these areas:
STAGE HAND/STAGE MANAGING Backstage help is crucial for successful events. The stage manager, working with the director, is in charge of everything that happens behind the scenes, and stagehands are the ones who operate the curtain, move scenery and set pieces between scenes, help with special effects, etc.
TECHNICAL ASSISTANTS ('TECHIES') They operate the light and sound boards and assist with lighting design and sound effects.
SET DESIGN/SCENERY Since space is limited at the Avenue Theatre, it's always challenging to find new ways to design sets to get the most out of our space. Sets have to be built (which usually requires a few basic carpentry skills at some point, but often duct tape, staples and a glue gun will also come into play). The sets then have to be painted and finished. If you have artistic abilities, this might be for you.
COSTUMES If you sew, perhaps you'd like to help out with costumes.
PUBLICITY We always need help getting the word out about what we're doing: Distributing flyers, table tents and other printed material, arranging for banners, and selling tickets also provide opportunities to volunteer.
'HOUSE DUTIES' During plays and other events, we need help with areas that are non-performance related. These are 'house management' duties and include things like working at the box office or concession stand, handing out programs, ushering and clean up.
